Colorado Springs and El Paso County Looking at the Costs of Stormy Summer

A severe and costly storm season kicked off summer in Colorado this year, and residents are still adding up their losses. Fifteen counties in the state received emergency assistance in the May and June storms, with the region around Colorado Springs being one of the hardest hit. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were devoted to initial emergency relief and recovery in the state, and the total cost of the individual losses experienced by residents, municipalities, and businesses far exceeded that amount. While some costs are still being added up, it’s clear that this year’s storm season came with a price tag of millions of dollars.

Summer Storm Damages Add Up to Millions of Dollars in Losses for Colorado Residents

While other areas across the United States were dealing with high winds, tornados, or large hail, El Paso County was suffering largely from nearly constant heavy rains. The Colorado Springs Gazette recently published an overview of some of the major losses sustained in the region during the stormy 2015 season, including:

• The Pikes Peak region saw heavy rains in the spring and summer, leading to losses worth millions of dollars. Residents saw heavy downpours starting in May that lead to an early summer full of landslides, destroyed roads, and mud. The rains and flooding were severe enough that there was a disaster declaration at the federal level.
• Flooding affected residential basements and businesses across the region, which left many buildings struggling with dampness and mold. At least two mold-removal and flood cleanup companies say they were getting nearly a hundred calls a day at first. Even though it is now months later, they say that they still continue to get calls for their services due to the heavy rains earlier this year.
• In El Paso County, more than $5 million in storm damages were reported for just county roads, trails, utilities, and infrastructure. In Colorado Springs, roads and bridges sustained about $1.2 million in damages.
• Residential properties above the Rockrimmon Channel were severely affected by landslides caused by the heavy rains, with well over $2 million in damages reported. At least one trailer park was affected, and some homes were left sitting on potentially unstable ground.
