Will the Storm and Hurricane Season Start Early With a Potential “Tropical Storm Ana?”

May isn’t usually the biggest month for tropical storms and hurricanes. In fact, the United States has only rarely been hit by a hurricane or serious tropical storm in the month of May in the past. However, according to USA Today, a new alert from the National Hurricane Center is warning that a potential early tropical storm could affect a stretch of coastline from Florida to the Carolinas. If a serious subtropical storm, tropical storm, or hurricane does develop according to these potential predictions, it will be the first this year. Meteorologists say that, if the storm warrants a name, it will be named Ana.

Pre-Season Tropical Storms Can Come as a Dangerous Surprise to Homeowners

Hurricane season generally runs from June 1 to November 30, so an early tropical storm in May could catch some homeowners before they’ve had time to prepare. Tropical storms and hurricanes are already dangerous and costly weather events, and an unexpected storm could mean that the price tag on losses is even higher. If live in a hurricane-prone area, make sure you get started on your storm preparations a little early this year.

Even if a storm doesn’t develop before the official start of hurricane season, residents on the East Coast could still be in for rough weather—so don’t get caught by surprise. The USA Today article reminds residents to be on the lookout for heavy rains, rip currents, and coastal flooding as the system moves through the area.

The storm season for 2015 has opened with a number of damaging storms across the United States, and a lot of homeowners are worried about paying the price.
