Mother’s Day turned to tragedy for multiple towns across the Midwest, as major storms moved across the Great Plains and produced a number of destructive tornadoes. Here’s a breakdown of some of the areas most affected by this recent spate of severe weather:
- South Dakota. The day of severe storms started on Sunday morning with reports of a twister in Delmont and the additional complication of Winter Storm Venus, which covered parts of the state in snow. The tornado in Delmont was rated a preliminary EF2 by the National Weather Service, and some residents were without power or water on Monday morning. The tornado caused extensive property damage in the city, including severe damage to a new fire hall and a Lutheran Church.
- Texas. The city of Van, with a population of approximately 2,500, suffered extensive losses after a nighttime tornado that took lives, damaged homes, and left evidence of destruction across at least a third of the town. Cisco, in the “Big Country,” also saw a severe tornado on Saturday, which was the first in the area since 1986. Denton reported a tornado later on Sunday. Heavy rains and severe flooding also affected other areas of the state and slowed recovery efforts and damage estimates. Following the severe weather, the governor declared a state of emergency in the counties of Clay, Denton, Bosque, Montague, Eastland, Van Zandt, and Gaines.
- Iowa. Just before 9 p.m. on Sunday night, Lake City reported a tornado. The twister, rated a preliminary EF1, tore part of the roof of South Central Calhoun High School and left a two-block-wide path of damage in areas where it touched down. The governor declared a state of emergency in Calhoun County, which will help with the area’s recovery from the storm.
- Arkansas. Howard County was hit hard by a tornado on Sunday evening that killed two people, injured other residents, and damaged properties. The tornado received a preliminary EF2 rating, with winds reaching speeds of 125 mph or more.
Additional storms, heavy rains, and flooding made damage estimates and rescue efforts difficult in some areas, and it may be a while before home and business owners in affected towns have a clear idea of the price tag on the damages from this outbreak of tornadoes.
