Northern Kansas Ethanol Plant Suffers Damage in Tornado

An ethanol plant near Scandia, Kansas, reported millions of dollars in damages after a recent severe storm, which dropped a damaging tornado on Republic County. The tornado was reported shortly after 5 p.m. on May 6, and it took a toll on homes and businesses across the Northern Kansas county. Premium Feeders, a beef-cattle feedlot just across the street from Nesika Energy, also reported major property and animal losses in the tornado.

Nesika Energy Reports Damage to Storage Bins and Grain Receiving Area After Tornado

The Nesika Energy plant, which produces approximately 30,000 gallons of ethanol daily, suffered damage to two grain storage bins and its grain receiving area. The grain receiving area, in particular, suffered extensive damage and will need to be rebuilt. Lisa Strnad, the company’s accounting manager, reported that its processing equipment appeared to be undamaged, and there were no obvious leaks. However, she did say that operations at the plant won’t restart for at least two weeks because of the other damage to the property. According to Strnad, operations could even be down for months, depending on how long it takes to repair and rebuild some of the hardest-hit areas.

As recovery and cleanup move forward, Nesika Energy will be working with engineers to make sure the plant is safe and ready to resume operations.
