What are three critical things that you must do to prepare for hurricane season?
1. Assemble your storm survival kit.
Start stocking up on non-perishable food and bottled water. You need enough to survive 3-5 days. Buy a few items every time you go to the grocery store so you don’t break the budget. If your freezer is full, eat the food now and replace it with bags of ice.
2. Plan your exit strategy.
If you live in an evacuation zone, plan where you’d go if a hurricane heads this way. Only those people that live in the storm surge flood plain need to evacuate. If you or a family member might need help leaving town, call 2-1-1 today to register with the state for evacuation help.
3. Buy flood insurance.
It can flood anywhere, not just near the coast or along the bayou. Your homeowner’s insurance does not cover flooding. New flood insurance policies do not go into effect for 30 days so talk to your agent before a hurricane develops.
