Before Purchasing a Gulf Coast Home, Get the Windstorm Insurance Certificate

If you are looking to purchase a home along the Gulf Coast or in an area likely to be hit by windstorms and hurricanes, it is important to know that the home received a windstorm insurance certificate (WPI-8).

What is a WPI-8?

When a home is built in a designated high-wind area that is known to have been hit by hurricanes or blasted by serious windstorms in the past, general homeowner’s insurance will not cover wind-related damages. This is because most homeowner’s insurance carriers dropped windstorm coverage after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and most windstorm insurance claims are only paid when a home has a windstorm insurance certificate, WPI-8.

This certificate means that the property was designed from the ground up, prior to the foundation being poured. The home has to meet windstorm construction codes, which include roof shingles and structure, foundation, and exterior and interior walls that have been certified by a windstorm engineer.

Before purchasing a home in the Gulf Coast, people should check for windstorm insurance certificates. Verify that the home has a WPI-8, and also call to see if the property is insurable.
Chances are that if you live in this area, it may only be a matter of time before a significant windstorm or hurricane damages your home and you need your insurance carrier to come through for you on your Texas windstorm claim.

If you have done everything right and your insurance company is still not paying your residential insurance claim or treating you fairly, you may want to get an experienced Texas insurance claim attorney involved. Because insurance claims are difficult to handle, you should turn to someone you can trust who can take some of the stress off of you.
