At 10 a.m. on Thursday morning, according to WXYZ-TV in Detroit, a devastating fire broke out at the historic Oakland Hills Country Club’s clubhouse. There are multiple videos and pictures of the scene, taken by both reporters and social media users. Firefighters can be seen attempting to stop the spread of the raging flames. It is reported by sports.yahoo.com, that at 11 a.m., just an hour after the fire started, the roof collapsed. Damage has been described as “extensive” and “irreparable”.
Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported as a result of the fire. However, the source of the fire is still unknown.
The history contained within the clubhouse is irreplaceable. Rebuilding the clubhouse can be done overtime, but the memorabilia inside is gone forever. It is reported that firefighters were able to salvage some of the items.
According to sports.yahoo.com, the USGA tweeted, “Our thoughts are with our friends @OaklandsHillsCC. Most importantly, we are relieved to hear that no one was injured.”
The tweet continues, “ Along with so many others in the golf community, we have special memories at this storied venue and look forward to making more with them in the coming years.”
