The Holiday Season and Fire Safety!

Tis the Season to be extra mindful regarding fire safety.

Every year at the Voss Law Firm, P.C. we see an uptick in fire cases during the winter months all over Texas cities, including: Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, El Paso, Lubbock, Odessa, Amarillo, and Abilene.

By the time these fire loss cases get to us, they have been underpaid, denied, or delayed by the insurance carrier. If this is the status with your claim, do not hesitate to reach out to us, the earlier the better!

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA.org) has given us a list of things to remember during the Holiday Season, as attached below:

A few additional items to remember regarding fire safety and The Holiday Season are as follows:

-       Be very careful with space heaters. If you are going to use them, remember not leave them unattended. Make sure they are a safe distance from anything flammable. The best course of action would be to not use them at all, if have a choice.

-       Keep an eye on animals: cats, dogs, rodents etc.. Animals can often times become infatuated with Christmas trees, lights, and decorations. They have been known to chew on Christmas tree lights.

-       Never leave your garage door closed if you are inside the garage, and in your car- running it for heat. We have all seen what a tragic end this can produce, from the winter freeze of 2021.

-       As always, it is a good idea to keep full copy of your insurance policy handy. Remember to also do a yearly policy review with your insurance agent, as to make sure your coverages are current. This can be especially important if you have had any changes on the property. An example of this might be if you have moved out of your home (as your primary residence) and have converted it into a rental property.

A good policyholder attorney should also be on your checklist. A good policyholder attorney will hold the insurance carrier’s feet to the fire when claims arise. It is well documented that insurance carriers can sometimes implement various tactics when trying to lessen their financial exposure to claims, including: underpayment, denial, and the delay of claims. This is no surprise, given the record number of increasing weather events in the last several years (as documented in earlier VLF blogs).

This is why it is important to consult with a reputable policyholder attorney when filing a claim, and especially if your claim has been denied, delayed, or underpaid.

The Voss Law Firm, P.C. has been protecting policyholder’s rights for the past sixteen years, recovering billions of dollars in settlements for our clients.
