Rare Coin Fraud Attorney Warns of Fake Coins
Many counterfeiters from China have recently been getting into this dishonest art. They have deceived many investors and even some coin experts. Global Piracy & Counterfeiting (GPC) indicates that China, a country known to make knock-offs, is the world’s leading manufacturer of fake coins – silver and gold bullion.
Unfortunately, laser-imaging and other technology has made counterfeiting easier, making fake coins higher quality and difficult to detect with the human eye. Because of this, buyers of precious metals need to be careful.
So, how can you protect yourself and your investment?
Counterfeit bullion coins, made out of various metal alloys, are intended to deceive investors out of their money. These fake gold coins may only be minted with an alloy consisting of 60% gold, instead of the 91.6% that it should consist of.
Many of these coins are sold on eBay. For this reason, it is wise not to buy rare gold coins or gold bullion coins on eBay. Rather, it is best to purchase gold coins from a licensed and reputable coin dealer, and then to get them appraised by a third party. If for some reason you are sold a fake gold coin from a dealer, you can take immediate legal action against that dealer.
You can also protect yourself against counterfeit coins by learning as much as you can about bullion coins. By familiarizing yourself with the color, weight and dimensions of bullion coins, you may be able to detect a counterfeit coin.
