According to the Alabama Red Cross, this tornado destroyed at least 211 homes and seriously damaged 218 others. Other reports indicate over 500 homes were damaged or destroyed. Additionally, many businesses were damaged, and one school will have to be bulldozed due to the damage it sustained. Homes were flattened, leveled by trees, or sustained property damage by the high winds that peeled off the roofs and let the rain waters in.
The majority of homes and properties damaged by this deadly twister were in Jefferson and Chilton counties, but other Alabama counties reported damage from the storm as the tornado roared across the heart of Alabama. In Jefferson County, the most severe damage was done in Clay, Center Point and Oak Grove, which is an area that has a history of being in tornado alley.
A second tornado affected Chilton County, sweeping through Maplesville to Clanton, destroying one business and several dozen homes.
