Will the Gulf of Mexico See a Hurricane Next Week?

A developing tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico has a high chance of spinning up into a hurricane by the middle of next week, forecasters warned Wednesday. "This is the most significant threat for the U.S. mainland we've had this hurricane season", Accuweather chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter said. The system was first spotted on Wednesday. Since then, it has gradually become better organized and is now expected to become a tropical depression later today or tonight.

Forecasters Warn of 'Significant Threat' to US

As of right now, it appears that the system in the Caribbean has a high chance of becoming a tropical storm by the weekend. If it does become a named storm, it would be called Hermine. The majority of computer forecast models show the system strengthen into a hurricane by early next week before curling northward into the Gulf of Mexico.

However, it is important to remember that these models are subject to change and that it is still too soon to make any definitive predictions. Regardless, everyone in the potential path of the storm should continue to monitor the situation and be prepared for any eventuality.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue tweeted Wednesday that if the GFS computer model is right, "then this is what we're dealing with: A major hurricane in the eastern Gulf of Mexico with impacts to the Florida Panhandle. But, all interests along the Gulf Coast from Houston to Key West should monitor for next few days when we'll know more."

AccuWeather released a statement today saying that it does not appear that the system currently making its way through the Caribbean will pose a threat to areas in the northeastern Caribbean, including Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, which were hit hard by Hurricane Fiona over the past few days.
