A series of severe storms moved through the center of the country the week of April 6, 2015, affecting millions of people. The storms picked up on Wednesday and were responsible for at least 17 tornadoes across the Midwest on Thursday. Reports of extensive damage from the severe weather have come in across several states, and it is known that at least two people lost their lives in Illinois. Here’s an overview of some of the early reports of the aftermath in the regions hit the hardest by the storms.
Illinois
Nine tornados touched down in the state, including a deadly tornado—potentially rated an EF4—that caused widespread damage in Northern Illinois on Thursday, April 9. The small community of Fairdale was devastated, with almost all homes sustaining some kind of damage and at least 20 completely destroyed. The areas in and around Rochelle saw the collapse of an iconic local restaurant, the destruction of around 30 homes, and severe damage to approximately 50 homes in the community. Governor Bruce Rauner declared state disaster areas in both Dekalb and Ogle counties as a result. A tornado also moved through Lee County. Kirkland, Ashton, and other communities in the area felt the effects of hail, heavy rains, and debris from the storm.
Iowa
Tornadoes moved over Eastern Iowa on April 9, affecting Clinton, Maysville, Fulton, Camanche, Dewitt, and other communities. Severe hail was reported in many areas, and tractor-trailers were overturned on the highway. Many farms, homes, and businesses sustained property damage.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma was affected by a few tornadoes and severe hailstorms on Wednesday. The severe weather came only shortly after the state had already been ravaged by severe storms at the end of March.
Damages from the same weather system of tornadoes, hail, and high winds were reported in several more states, including Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, and Texas. While the system has already proven devastating for homes, businesses, and local governments across the area, more reports are expected to come in as the damage from this huge weather system is fully assessed.
