According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the number of home insurance claims involving hail damage is on the rise. Statistics show an 84 percent increase in claims across the country between 2010 and 2012. Texas was the state that reported both the most hailstorms as well as the most hailstorm insurance claims.
Weather experts and insurance experts believe that the sharp rise in claims over the past three years is the result of an increasing number of severe storms affecting Texas and the surrounding region of the country.
During 2010, residents across the country filed 467,602 hail damage claims with their insurance companies. Some claims were for minor repairs and others for significant damage such as roof replacement. That number of hail claims increased to 689,267 in 2011 and again to 861,597 in 2012. This increase in hail insurance claims mirrors the number of hailstorms reported by the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. Texas experienced 557 hailstorms in 2010, 741 hailstorms in 2011, and 795 hailstorms in 2012.
Texas had the most hail damage insurance claims during the period mentioned above: 320,823. Other states with large numbers of hail insurance claims included Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.
The NICB warns homeowners that hailstorm insurance claims could involve contractor fraud. The organization is using the data collected for the above report to help educate those whose homes are damaged by hail.
